Purina Mills Equine Senior®
Purina Mills Equine Senior® horse feed is formulated to provide owners with a complete feed that furnishes optimum nutrition for the older horse’s less efficient metabolic systems for a long and contented life. The feed, which was developed at Purina Mills Equine Research Unit, is made up of pre-processed alfalfa and grain products that are high in nutrients and more easily digested by older horses than whole grain feeds, loose hay or pasture.
Feed Form: Complete Pellet
Recommended For:
Older Horses, especially those that may be losing weight due to poor nutrient absorption, dental problems or no teeth at all.
Features and Benefits:
“All-in-One” Pre-Processed Pelleted and Patented Extruded “Pre-Cooked” Feed Form—Uniquely formulated with pre-processed alfalfa and grain products to provide a high nutrient density in a form that is more easily digested than whole grain feed, loose hay or pasture
Complete Feed—Equine Senior® horse feed can be fed as a complete feed by itself or in a combination with pasture or hay

Improved Hair Coat—Added vegetable oils in fatty acids are associated with improved skin and hair coat
Added Nutrients—Contains added Vitamin C, Biotin, Vitamin B-12, trace minerals and adjusted levels of calcium, phosphorus, protein, wheat bran and fat to meet the specific nutritional needs of older horses

Purina Mills Equine Senior® horse feed for maintenance of mature horses
Equine Senior® horse feed by Purina Mills is a specifically formulated horse feed which addresses the “special nutritional needs” of older horses with less efficient metabolic systems
It can be fed as a complete feed by itself or in a combination with pasture or hay. “All-in-One” pre-processed pelleted and patented extruded “pre-cooked” feed form
Equine Senior® horse feed may be fed as a complete feed because it is formulated with high quality roughage. You may also feed with hay or pasture per directions
Winter feeding—In winter, the amount fed may need to be increased by about 10% to 15% to offset increased body heat losses
Hay—Small amounts (4-5 pounds per day) of good quality hay may be fed along with the feed. The amount of Equine Senior® horse feed can be reduced about one pound for each 2 pounds of hay fed.
In cases of extreme teeth problems or no teeth at all, Equine Senior® horse feed may be mixed with warm or cold water to make a soft mash or soup. Allow it to sit for five minutes until mash from water can be adjusted to the horse’s preference.
Do not feed free-choice
Feed at regular times (at least twice daily). When feeding rates exceed 1% of body weight, three daily feedings is preferred
Any feed changes should be made gradually over a period of 7 to 10 days
Changes in the rate of feeding should not exceed one pound per day for each horse
Feed according to the recommended amounts shown. For more specific feeding recommendations contact a Purina Mills representative
Feed along with at least 1-1.5% of horse’s body weight of good quality hay or the equivalent in pasture to make a complete ration (hay and pasture are optional when feeding Equine Family or other complete feeds with roughage included)
Have plenty of fresh, clean water available at all times
Prevent the rapid eating by the horse of any feed stuffs
Store feed in a dry, well-ventilated area protected from rodents and insects
Do not feed moldy or insect-infested feed to animals as it may cause illness or death
This product to be fed to the animal species as directed on the label
In addition to nutritional care and consultation, be sure to make regular veterinary checkups and farrier appointments part of your horse wellness program
